The Biolixi Ocean hurrricane Back-Up list was established in 2008 after that year's hurricane season had reached the "W" named storm. Just in case a season were to over top the National Hurricane Center created a special back-up list for systems that form after the given season list has been completely used up. Even though for three straight hurricane seasons that reached the "W" named storm, not one season produced an extra tropical storm or hurricane. That wasn't the case in 2012 when the season over topped with an extra tropical cyclone in early December after the season had officially ended. The tropical cyclone was named January after the month of January since the back-up list contains only that of the months in a year. The reason of this choice is unknown.
